The True Meaning

What is Christmas? Is it a time for families to be together? Is it a time for good food? Is it a time for presents and parties? Why do we celebrate Christmas anyway? Well, I hope when you finish reading this you will have the true answer to all of these questions.

For years I have had a radio playing at Christmas time and have always thoroughly enjoyed it but this year I really started listening. They always have call in shows where people tell what Christmas means to them and I have heard many wonderful stories but I got to noticing something. Everyone of them was the same. Here are some examples. Just listen and you will see what I mean.

One man said, "Christmas is a very special time for me. I live many miles away and I work in a factory as a line hand so I have very little money. At Christmas every year my Mom and Dad send me and my wife airline tickets. We load up the suitcases and take our precious daughter to visit them. We always have a big dinner and some of Mom's mouthwatering apple pie. It is quite delicious. I only get to see them once a year and that is why Christmas is so special to me."

Another individual said, "This year for Christmas I am going to get a new set of golf clubs, golf clothes, and my own personalized golf balls and golf bag. My wife has been saving and is going to buy them for me. This is going to be the best Christmas I have ever had."

I heard a lady call in one time and tell how she was pregnant and was due on Christmas day. She was so excited. She was only twenty-three and this was her first child. She spoke of all of the wonderful toys she had bought for the child she was expecting. She was looking so forward to her new arrival. She was just ecstatic. she talked on and on for what seemed like forever about all of the things she was going to buy for her baby and all of the things that others had bought for her. Yes, this Christmas was going to be special.

I really listened and enjoyed these stories until one day I woke up and realized that the one thing missing from all of this was Jesus. That' right. During all of these times I recall very few times, if ever, hearing anyone speak of the birth of Jesus.

Although time with your family, gifts, and good food are great, it really scares me that so many people have either forgotten or have never heard the true meaning of Christmas.

Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth of our wonderful Savior Jesus Christ. The Bible says in Luke chapter two, "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the lord." John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish but have ever lasting life.

So, Please! This year while you are having your dinners, opening your gifts, or what ever it is you are doing, remember that Jesus is the reason for the season and that time to think about what a wonderful gift God has given to us. Take time to thank him and if you don't know him as your Savior, if you have never heard the true story of why we celebrate this great holiday, I ask you. No, I beg you! Read the bible. Go to Church. Speak with a minister. Do whatever it takes to learn more about him.

I pray that this has been a blessing to someone and that it will help us all to remember Jesus, not only during Christmas but all through out the year.
